A great tasting Detox Smoothie that combines detoxifying fruits & vegetables and bentonite clay to easy and effectively detox internally. Learn about 45+ more awesome ways to use bentonite clay!

Each year, as the holiday season comes to a close, and the New Year begins, I start to look forward to spring. I start thinking about cleaning my home and detoxing my body.
With that said, this post reflects easy ways to detoxify the body, the products we use on ourselves, as well as using non-toxic supplies around the house. When it comes to detoxifying the body, the first ingredient that I think of is bentonite clay.
Long-time readers will remember that we’ve been using bentonite clay (we use Redmond clay) for a couple of years now in our homemade toothpaste recipe. Actually, we attribute my husband overcoming gum disease and myself having a healthy check-up after not seeing the dentist for 2 years to Redmond Clay.
To say that bentonite clay has been pivotal to improving our health sounds a bit sensational, except that it’s absolutely true!

Redmond Clay is 100% natural bentonite clay. They don’t add anything to it or take anything away and up until now, we’ve only used bentonite clay externally. However, it works to detoxify the body internally in 3 remarkable ways:
Adsorption:
“…the formation of bentonite resembles tiny business card shapes with the wide surfaces having a negative charge… many toxins, heavy metals, and free radicals carry a positive charge… [the positive is attracted to the negative and creates] a bond that keeps the toxin and clay together in suspension until the body eliminates the pair together.”
Absorption:
“… functions like a sponge–it’s a slower and less selective process, but other elements in the gut become assimilated by clay, allowing the body to rid itself of potentially harmful material after absorption occurs…”
Balancing pH:
“Redmond Clay is quite alkaline and has proven effective in neutralizing heartburn, reflux, and upset stomachs…naturopathic professionals have started recommending high alkaline diets as a means of improving long-term health…”
Pretty cool, right?

How to Use Bentonite Clay to Internally Detox
My absolute favorite way to detox is to incorporate the best fruits and vegetables, known to detox the body, into a healthy detox smoothie (made without protein powder!) and include the clay.
Not only does the smoothie taste really good (so good that I wrote a whole book about them), but I love knowing I’m getting the healthy detox benefits of all these foods AND bentonite clay all at the same time.
Plus it’s something I know my husband will drink, and I can make a smaller batch for my kids too and they won’t even know it has clay in it.
In my mind, it’s a perfect way to detox internally with clay! What a great way to start the day!
Ingredients in a Detox Smoothie with Bentonite Clay
You will absolutely love this smoothie detox recipe.
- kefir or Greek yogurt
- bentonite clay (I use Redmond Clay)
- fresh ginger, shaved or grated (freeze extra ginger)
- lemon (or lemon juice)
- spinach
- berries
- water (you can also thin the smoothie with almond milk or coconut water)
Note: Depending on what you have on hand, you can always use either fresh or frozen fruits and veggies. Some people also like to add chia seeds for added fiber.

That’s it!

What are some other ways to use bentonite clay to internally detox?
1. Take a pill
One of the easiest ways to use bentonite internally is to take a capsule. It’s super convenient and you don’t have to worry about the taste of the clay as you would with other methods.
My only issue with this option is that I normally don’t keep bentonite clay capsules at home.
2. Drink Water Mixed with Bentonite Clay
This is another easy way to use bentonite clay to detox internally. But after trying this myself, I can’t say it’s something I’m willing to do on a regular basis. My reasoning?
It doesn’t taste very good.
I can usually turn a blind eye to the taste of something if I know it’s for a good reason (like the idea of adding liver to my healthy smoothie), and I’ve been brushing my teeth with bentonite clay without any essential oil flavors – ever since we lived in a one-bedroom apartment for a few months.
Despite these things, I seriously considered ditching the glass of clay and water about halfway through, which means it likely won’t be something I’ll be doing in the future.
So I tried adding 1 teaspoon to an 8 oz glass of water, stir and allow the clay to settle. Then drink the water. While it’s more palatable than the first option, it’s still not something I’d be excited to drink every day.
Tips for Making a Detox Smoothie with Bentonite Clay
This recipe makes one smoothie. Feel free to double, triple, or quadruple as desired. Remember:
- Redmond Clay is pretty powerful and when you first begin to detox, you might experience adverse side effects like headaches, nausea, fatigue, or extreme energy and body aches.
- The key is to take it slowly by incorporating clay internally just once a week and drinking lots of water. It’s safe to take Redmond Clay internally on a daily basis, but every person is different, so listen to your body when it comes to increasing or decreasing the frequency.
- There’s no doubt though that using bentonite clay (we use Redmond Clay) internally, as a way to naturally detox, is a great baby step to take to a healthier new year!
Note: I get asked all the time about the warning label on Redmond Clay. If you’ve ever wondered about Proposition 65, or lead warnings on Redmond Clay, take a look at this information!
