Quick and easy homemade salsa recipe. Made with simple on-hand ingredients. Great taste with just enough kick to make you come back for more!

This is not just any salsa – this is the best homemade salsa that one could ask for (trust me, you will LOVE this salsa)!

That’s saying a lot from a gal who grew up in Texas – where Tex-Mex restaurants either make or break their reputation based on their chips and salsa.

Where I grew up, there were Tex-Mex restaurants EVERYWHERE and I was able to spend nearly 20 years tasting the different varieties of restaurant style salsas that these establishments had to offer:

Warm, cold, spicy, mild…

roasted, Pico de Gallo, corn, black bean, mango…

To say that I’ve tried a few different salsas is an understatement.

Consider me a salsa pro.

Made with simple, real food ingredients, this salsa tastes so fresh. Enjoy it with fresh tortilla chips, or for taco night!

You can imagine my upset back when we moved from Texas to California, and realized that not only were Mexican restaurants sparse, but “chips and fresh salsa” were considered a side dish that you ask for (and pay for) when you place your order.  They’re not brought out automatically with tall glasses of ice water.

WHAT?!

Oh no.  That wasn’t going to work.  We practically drank salsa with tortilla chips. It had its own food group in our house.  We needed a better solution, pronto!

So, I tried nearly every brand of store-bought and settled on one that was “decent” enough to get by.

BUT…then a good friend passed on her homemade recipe. We tried it with nothing to lose and everything to gain.  And gain we did!  It was one of the best salsas we’d ever had!

And I’m a salsa pro, remember? 😉

Ever since that day, we’ve made our own salsa and we’re not ever looking back! Not only are the fresh ingredients super easy to find (I only have to go as far as our pantry!), but you can tailor the heat and spices to your liking.

Without further ado, I present to you, “Jay’s Salsa.”  Many, many, MANY thanks to Lindsay for passing on this delicious recipe years ago!

This is the best homemade salsa ever! The simple real food ingredients are easy to find and put together for taco night!

Easy Homemade Salsa

There are so many reasons to absolutely LOVE this salsa! It’s versatile simply because you can customize it to your desired spice level. It’s also:

  • Frugal. Using the items already in your pantry, this recipe is so affordable. If you have a garden, it’s even easier on your food budget!
  • Delicious! It tastes SO clean and fresh, with the tomatoes, onion & garlic, compared to a salsa that has been sitting in a jar on store shelves for a month.
  • Quick and Easy.  This can be whipped up in just a few minutes and that alone makes it so much better than store-bought.

Ingredients for Fresh Homemade Salsa

At first, it may seem like a lot of ingredients, but it’s SO easy to toss this recipe together with staple pantry ingredients that you already have on hand!

  • Diced tomatoes (you can even use fire roasted tomatoes or garden Roma tomatoes, for example)
  • Cilantro
  • Jalapenos (or any green chiles)
  • White onion
  • Lime Juice (fresh or bottled)
  • Garlic
  • Cumin
  • Salt & Pepper

Do you peel tomatoes for salsa?

For this recipe, we are using canned diced tomatoes, (if you want to make them yourself, here is a recipe for canned diced tomatoes)…So, there’s no peeling. And if you use your beautiful garden bounty, it’s more of a preference thing, but since the salsa is blended here, you won’t need to. Plus, the skins mean added nutrition!

This delicious homemade salsa recipe uses diced canned tomatoes, which can also be homemade if you have a garden bounty! Yum!

How to Make Homemade Salsa from scratch

I can’t think of a method that is any easier!

  1. Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.

VOILA! You are finished! Serve with your favorite tortilla chips, or enjoy as a part of taco night with homemade corn tortillas! Trust me…it will be better than your favorite Mexican restaurant!

How long does Homemade Salsa last?

As long as you keep it refrigerated, it will last for 5-7 days. But I’ll bet it won’t last that long in the house!

Why is my homemade salsa watery?

If you use fresh tomatoes from your garden, be sure to remove the seedy pulp from the inside of the tomato by first quartering, then separating the pulp from the flesh and discarding/composting.

This seedy pulp can make salsa more watery, but since this recipe is blended, it will be less of an issue. Perfect!
